Giant energy project underway

A giant step has been taken in the field of energy in the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus.

A protocol was signed on Tuesday between the SAN-HO North Cyprus Energy Company set up jointly between the Cyprus Turkish Chamber of Industry and the Cyprus Turkish Hoteliers’ Association and the TRNC government.

Prime Minister Ünal Üstel who signed the protocol said that work had begun to bring electricity to the TRNC from Türkiye via cable which he added will pave the way for greener and cleaner energy.

The protocol signed between the SAN-HO North Cyprus Energy Company and the TRNC government on Tuesday envisages the creation of a 25MW solar energy farm in Serhatköy, near Güzelyurt.

Speaking after the signing of the protocol, the head of the Cyprus Turkish Hoteliers’ Association Dimağ Çağıner said that the plan was to complete the solar energy farm by the end of this year.

He described this move as an important step in addressing the country’s energy shortage.

Also speaking, the head of the Cyprus Turkish Chamber of Industry Ali Kamacıoğlu said that they had been working on the project for more than a year.

Minister of Economy and Energy Olgun Amcaoğlu who was also at the ceremony, said that they were working towards improving the country’s service sector.

“We’re on the right path. If we want to achieve green energy and zero emissions we need to produce cleaner and more efficient energy. The protocol signed today is a step in the right direction,” he added.

Delivering the final speech, Prime Minister Ünal Üstel said that they were witnessing a historic occasion, one that they wanted to see in other sectors of the country as well.

“We are an island and higher education as well as production is extremely important for us. Naturally we need sustainable and a secure supply of energy. We are working in that direction,” he said.
