The Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC) is working on establishing a Geographical Information System (GIS), Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Tourism, Culture, Youth and Environment Fikri Ataoğlu announced on Monday.

A delegation from the TRNC recently visited Ankara to discuss a cooperation protocol on the use of GIS in the public sector.

In a statement on Monday, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Tourism, Culture, Youth and Environment Fikri Ataoğlu emphasized the importance of the initiative, noting that it aimed to increase the utilization of GIS in various sectors such as agriculture, forestry, tourism, planning, public works, and environment.

The GIS will provide accurate and up-to-date data for planning, management, and decision-making processes.

The cooperation protocol aims to streamline zoning issues, effectively manage infrastructure projects and improve the quality of life for citizens.

Additionally, the GIS will enhance environmental policies by assisting in the identification of environmental risks, disaster preparedness and water resource management.

He said that by implementing GIS, the TRNC hopes to bolster efficiency and take sustainable steps across different sectors.
