The UN Secretary-General’s personal envoy Maria Angela Holguin held contacts on the island on Monday afternoon.

Holguin met with the leader of the Greek Cypriot administration Nikos Christodoulides in the afternoon.

She also came together with the Mayor of Lefkoşa Mehmet Harmancı.

According to the news website ‘Sigmalive’, the UN personal envoy told reporters after the meeting that they had a very constructive meeting with Christodoulides and that they will meet once more in the coming days.

Noting that they have started an important week, Holguin said that she will meet with different political parties to find out their views on the Cyprus problem.

She pointed out that she returned to Cyprus after a series of contacts in Ankara, Athens and London and that she will continue to work with all her energy.

Christodoulides, for his part, said that he and Holguin exchanged views on the Cyprus problem and received information on Holguin’s contacts.

Special Representative of the UN Secretary-General for Cyprus Colin Stewart and the Greek Cypriot Government Spokesperson Konstandinos Letimbiotis were also present during the meeting.

Holguin then visited the Mayor of the Lefkoşa Turkish Municipality Mehmet Harmancı.

During the meeting held at the Municipality, Harmancı presented Holguin with the Lefkoşa Master Plan prepared by both the Turkish Cypriot and Greek Cypriot Municipalities and the visuals of the Kanlıdere Project on which the two municipalities have agreed upon.

In his speech at the meeting, Harmancı noted that he was pleased to see Holguin at the Lefkoşa Turkish Municipality and noted that he understood Holguin’s task and the difficulty of building bridges between the two communities.

He also expressed his belief that Holguin will put different elements on the table with a different perspective that will bring the two communities closer, break down the wall between the parties and at least restart the negotiations.

Harmancı said that they are willing to contribute to the new process and noted that a way must be found to overcome the obstacles.
