Independent MP Hasan Tosunoğlu has submitted his resignation to the Republic’s Assembly. His resignation letter was handed in on Friday, and according to Parliamentary Speaker Ziya Öztürkler, the process is now moving through official channels.
Öztürkler stated that the Speaker’s Board would first summon and listen to Tosunoğlu before the General Assembly makes the final decision on whether to accept his resignation.

Speaking to the Turkish News Agency Cyprus (TAK), Parliamentary Speaker Ziya Öztürkler also confirmed that the Office of the Attorney General submitted a file to Parliament on the same day, requesting the lifting of Tosunoğlu’s parliamentary immunity.
The Speaker noted that political parties have been asked to nominate members for a special committee that will review the immunity case.
Under Article 132 of the Assembly’s internal rules, the Speaker’s Board is responsible for verifying the authenticity of a resignation. Should the resignation be deemed genuine, a vote will take place in the General Assembly, where an absolute majority of those present must vote in favour for it to be accepted.
Öztürkler emphasized that the vote would be conducted openly.
Hasan Tosunoğlu was elected as an MP for Lefkoşa in the January 23, 2022, snap general elections under the Democratic Party banner.
He took office on February 7, 2022, and resigned from his party on November 25, 2024, becoming an independent MP.
