The informal tripartite dinner meeting with the Greek and Turkish Cypriot leaders in New York was described as “very good” by UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres.
The meeting between President Ersin Tatar and Greek Cypriot leader Nikos Christodoulides took place in the early hours of Wednesday, Cyprus time, at UN headquarters in New York, and lasted about an hour and a half.
The outcomes of the meeting were an agreement to future multilateral meetings and a discussion over the opening of more crossing points.
Speaking at a press conference after the meeting, President Ersin Tatar said that many things were discussed including the impact of ongoing embargoes and isolation and that the next step will be a wider meeting with Türkiye and Greece as guarantor powers.
He emphasized that formal negotiations would not resume unless the sovereign equality and equal international status of Turkish Cypriots were confirmed.
Tatar reiterated that the Turkish Cypriot side’s stance remains unchanged, stating, “I have presented a new vision, as efforts for a federal solution have failed over the past 50 years.”
He also revealed that he and Greek Cypriot leader Nikos Christodoulides plan to meet in Cyprus to discuss the opening of new border crossings.
He noted that the realization of this initiative depends on the acceptability of the proposals put forward.
President Ersin Tatar will be returning to the Republic tonight.
