Martyrs from the İnönü village who were ambushed and killed by Greek Cypriots whilst on their way to work in Gazimağusa on July 12, 1958 were remembered on Wednesday with a ceremony.
Martyrs of İnönü were commemorated on Wednesday with a ceremony held on the 65th anniversary of their deaths.
Wreaths were laid, a minutes silence was observed and shots were fired in tribute and flags were raised to the national anthem in front of the İnönü Martyrs Monument.
Speaking at the ceremony, President Ersin Tatar touched upon the developments that had taken place prior to the establishment of the 1960 Republic of Cyprus, explaining the importance of Türkiye’s active and affective guarantees.
Stating that the events that took place were heart-rending
, Tatar emphasized that peace had been achieved in Cyprus with the arrival of the Turkish Armed Forces on July 1974.
He said that the events that took place in the past should never be forgotten and known by everyone.
“Yes we also want peace, we also want an agreement, but for us, peace came to the whole of Cyprus on July 20, 1974,” said Tatar, arguing that what was missing was not peace but an agreement.
