The Minister of Public Works and Transportation Erhan Arıklı and the Turkish Ambassador to Lefkoşa Metin Feyzioğlu were at the new Ercan airport terminal on Wednesday for on-the-spot inspections.

During their visit, Arıklı and Feyzioğlu toured the airport, received information from the authorities and held a press conference.

Touching upon the delay experienced with opening the new terminal, the Minister of Public Works and Transportation Erhan Arıklı said, “The earthquake that occurred in Türkiye on February 6 unfortunately caused widespread damage in Kahramanmaraş where panels and transformers for the airport are being produced. Therefore, we are once again experiencing some delays.Production has resumed and deliveries have started, we are waiting.Once they arrive they will be swiftly assembled and the new terminal will be opened for business,” Arıklı explained.

Explaining that the new Ercan Airport was similar in size to Dalaman, Turkey’s fourth largest airport, Minister Arıklı said that the new airport has the capacity to serve 10 million passengers.

The Turkish Ambassador Feyzioğlu for his part said, “The instruction of our President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan is; to ‘provide the highest level of coordination and unite the Turkish Cypriot people and the TRNC with this great project as soon as possible. Since I arrived I have been involved in everything from A to Z. I have been following the work closely. This is a great project and 98 per cent of the terminal has been completed.”

Stressing that the New Ercan Airport was designed to compete with all contemporary airports around the world, Feyzioğlu said, “We will experience great pride when the new terminal becomes operational.”
