In a message commemorating the 50th anniversary of the Cyprus Peace Operation, Speaker of the Turkish Grand National Assembly Numan Kurtulmuş emphasized that July 20 symbolizes the courage and perseverance of the Turkish Cypriot people in achieving their freedom.
In his message issued on Saturday, the Turkish Parliamentary Speaker Numan Kurtulmuş stated, “We celebrate the 50th anniversary of the victory achieved through the Cyprus Peace Operation with great pride and joy.”
He highlighted that the steps taken on July 20, 1974, for peace and tranquillity marked a significant turning point for the security and sovereignty of the Turkish Cypriot people.
Kurtulmuş underscored that July 20 is a symbol of the freedom gained by the Turkish Cypriots through courage and patience.
The Turkish parliamentary speaker also noted that the Peace Operation affirmed the independence of both Türkiye and the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC).
“Before the operation, we remember the massacres committed against the Turkish Cypriots, honouring the memory of our national struggle for peace and justice. This operation symbolizes Türkiye’s determination to protect its rights under international law and defend the homeland of the Turkish Cypriots. It also established a peaceful environment on the island by ensuring security and tranquillity, eliminating conflicts,” he said.
Kurtulmuş emphasized that recognizing the rights and equal status of the Turkish Cypriot people is essential for regional stability and peace. He stressed the importance of dialogue and cooperation to achieve a just agreement in Cyprus.
He expressed confidence that the Turkish Cypriot people would continue to live in peace and security within their independent state and reiterated the commitment to pursuing diplomatic efforts for a lasting solution that addresses the needs of the Turkish Cypriot people and supports the recognition of the TRNC.
