The Speaker of the Turkish Grand National Assembly Numan Kurtulmuş conveyed important messages during his meeting with the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus’ (TRNC) Ambassador to Ankara Ankara İsmet Korukoğlu.

Kurtulmuş emphasized that Türkiye will always stand by the Turkish Cypriot people in their struggle for recognition and sovereignty rights.

Regarding the attempts by the United Nations Peacekeeping Force’s efforts to prevent expansion and repair work on the Pile-Yiğitler Road, Kurtulmuş said, “The UN Peacekeeping Force’s stance is unreasonable and lacks wisdom.”

Numan Kurtulmuş, the Speaker of the Turkish Grand National Assembly, made important statements during his meeting with the TRNC’s Ambassador to Ankara İsmet Korukoğlu.

Kurtulmuş highlighted that Türkiye is alongside the TRNC in all areas and mentioned that they will continue their intensive efforts for the international recognition of the TRNC.

He said that after years of struggle, it has been understood that there is no other way in Cyprus but to accept a solution based on a two-state model.

Kurtulmuş emphasized that the Turkish side has always been compromising and in favor of an agreement, as well as in favor of the integrity of Cyprus.

However, he regretfully noted that the international community consistently evaluates this with a double standard against the Turkish Cypriots.

Regarding the attempt to obstruct the Pile-Yiğitler Road project by UNFICYP, Kurtulmuş said, “From time to time, difficulties are created for the TRNC. The attempt to prevent the realization of a purely humanitarian project, such as the construction of a road to the village of Pile, which has no rational basis, is incompatible with international law. Trying to forcibly obstruct the implementation of a humanitarian project is unacceptable.”

Kurtulmuş argued that the TRNC authorities responded appropriately to this situation, adding that work on the road is continuing.

The Turkish parliamentary speaker said that it was unreasonable and irrational for the United Nations Peacekeeping Force, which remains silent in the face of numerous violations by the Greek Cypriots in the buffer zone, to oppose a project to build a road that will ease the lives of Turkish Cypriots living in Pile.

“This incident shows that we have to take the matter into our own hands,” Kurtulmuş said, adding that they will continue to protect all the rights of the Turkish Cypriot people without compromising from their sovereignty.

Speaker Kurtulmuş also reminded that the Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan had inaugrated the new terminal building and runway of Ercan Airport on July 20, emphasizing that this event carried a much deeper meaning than just an airport opening.

“It demonstrates to the whole world that the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus is an important state. Furthermore, the signing of an agreement for the establishment of an interconnectivity project is extremely significant for the future of the TRNC,” he said.
