The capital Lefkoşa hosted the 12th annual Lefkoşa Marathon yesterday under the slogan “Running to Victory with Our Heroes.”
The event, sponsored by Ülker, attracted thousands of participants from Lefkoşa and across the country, all united for a noble cause: proceeds from the marathon will be donated to the Children’s Oncology Unit to support young patients’ treatment.
The marathon, featuring 21km and 10km races, began with a starting signal from Lefkoşa Turkish Municipality (LTB) Mayor Mehmet Harmancı.
Winners in various categories were recognized with awards at the event’s conclusion.
A special highlight was the children’s race, held for the first time this year, which started at 9:40 a.m.
Mayor Harmancı, accompanied by children receiving treatment at the Children’s Oncology Unit, officially launched the race.
The public run, drawing thousands of participants, was a vibrant affair featuring live music, children’s activities, mascots, and food and beverage stands.
Along the marathon route and at the Municipality Town Hall—the starting and finishing point—entertainment, including sets by DJs Coşkuner and Altuğ Dülger, energized participants.
The event also saw participation from President Ersin Tatar, who praised the organizers and contributors to the marathon.
Highlighting its dual purpose—promoting health and fulfilling a social responsibility—Tatar emphasized the importance of solidarity and community spirit.
He noted ongoing initiatives, including the establishment of a 400-dönüm park with walking trails in the Metehan area near the Presidential Complex, aimed at promoting healthy living and leaving a legacy for future generations.
Mayor Harmancı, speaking to BRT, outlined the goals of the marathon, emphasizing its community impact. Leaders of major political parties, including Republican Turkish Party (CTP) leader Tufan Erhürman, also participated in the event, sharing their thoughts on its significance.
The families of the “Champion Angels”—children lost in the 2023 Türkiye earthquake—attended the marathon as well.
Ruşen Karakaya, Chairperson of the Champion Angels Memorial Association, expressed gratitude for the event’s meaning and solidarity.
