The Lefkoşa Turkish Municipality is continuing to assist recovery efforts in Hatay’s Samandağ District following last week’s devastating earthquake in Kahramanmaraş.

The municipality’s Disaster Assistance Team is carrying out search and rescue efforts in the area.

Speaking to reporters in Hatay, the Mayor of Lefkoşa Mehmet Harmancı said that the municipality’s team had split into two groups, one involved in rescue efforts while the other handing out humanitarian supplies and food.

“One of our groups which are carrying out rescue efforts unfortunately recovered the bodies of two adults trapped under the rubble. They were handed over to their families. However, despite all the negative developments, we witnessed the rescue of a young person by the name of Adil on the 6th day of the earthquake which has boosted the team’s morale. The second group from the municipality are providing food, clothing and medical supplies to the earthquake victims,” he said.

The Lefkoşa Mayor said that his teams were working hard and under difficult conditions to help save lives as well as to provide humanitarian assistance to the people of Hatay.
