Martyrs who fell during the Geçitkale and Boğaziçi Resistance on 15th November 1967 were commemorated in a ceremony at the Geçitkale Martyrs’ Monument.
The ceremony began with wreath-laying at the monument, followed by a moment of silence and three rifle salutes.
As the Turkish and TRNC flags were raised to the sound of the national anthem, the ceremony continued with a speech by Geçitkale Serdarlı Mayor Halil Kasım.
Mayor Kasım honoured the 24 martyrs, both male and female, who were martyred in the treacherous attacks by the Greek Cypriot Terrorist Organisation EOKA.
He emphasized that thanks to the Republic of Türkiye, the Turkish Cypriots are able to live freely in their own land.
The event continued with a recital of the poem “Mehmet Emin Destanı” by Selma Ozanalp, a student from Geçitkale Cumhuriyet High School.
The ceremony concluded with a prayer for the martyrs by a religious official, followed by a visit to the graves of the fallen heroes.
