MFA makes appeal for info on missing GCs

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs has called on individuals who have information regarding Greek Cypriots who went missing during the 1st and 2nd phases of the 1974 Turkish Peace Operation to contact the police.

It said that an official investigation process has been initiated to determine the circumstances of the death of missing Greek Cypriots.

The ministry has called on individuals with any information regarding Greek Cypriots who went missing or killed during the first and second phases of the 1974 Turkish Peace Operation, or whose identities have been identified by the Committee on Missing Persons, to reach out to the General Directorate of Police.

The foreign ministry statement highlighted that, as a result of excavations conducted by the Committee on Missing Persons (CMP) in various areas, and based on applications made by the families of Greek Cypriot missing persons to the European Court of Human Rights (ECHR), an effective investigative process has been initiated under the supervision of the Prosecutor’s Office within the General Directorate of Police to investigate the circumstances of their deaths.

“Following the efforts of the CMP, investigations have led to the discovery of remains and the identification of Greek Cypriots through DNA methods. In order to explore the circumstances of the death of these identified individuals, the Office of the Prosecutor General is overseeing an inquiry within the framework of the General Directorate of Police. The Ministry is requesting individuals who possess any information regarding the disappearance and death of these individuals or their relatives to come forward and provide statements at the Police General Directorate in Lefkoşa under the supervision of the Office of the Prosecutor General,” the statement said.
