The Ministry of Foreign Affairs has slammed the Greek Cypriot leader Nicos Christodoulides for his latest remarks.
A statement issued by the ministry said that Christodoulides’ remarks, like those of his predecessors were aimed at concealing the facts in Cyprus.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs on Tuesday slammed the Greek Cypriot leader Nicos Christodoulides for his latest remarks on the Cyprus issue delivered during a church sermon in South Cyprus.
A written statement issued by the ministry said that the comments made by Christodoulides who had spared no effort to disrupt the talks in Crans Montana, had no value.
It said that the view expressed by the Greek Cypriot leader, who was responsible for the collapse of the previous negotiations process, that the talks aimed at reaching a federal settlement should resume from where they left off in Crans Montana, was simple hypocrisy.
“It was clear that the current Greek Cypriot leader had disrupted the talks for the sake of maintaining the status quo on the island and forcing Turkish Cypriots to live under embargoes,” the statement read.
It pointed out that the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC) has determined a new vision based on the sovereign equality of two-states following the failure of the last attempt to reach a federal settlement on the island.
“The Greek Cypriot leader who is well aware that the Turkish Cypriot side’s position will not change, needs to inform his people of the realities,” the statement said.
The foreign ministry also expressed disappointment over how a religious sermon had been transformed into a political stage for propaganda.
“We would also like to remind once again how the Greek Cypriot Orthodox Church gave its clergy weapons training sessions and how the current Greek Cypriot leader, who posed in front of Enosis posters, was pursuing an aggressive armament campaign against Turkish Cypriots,” the foreign ministry statement concluded.
