The Ministry of Foreign Affairs has strongly reacted to the latest statement made by the UN Security Council regarding a settlement in Cyprus.

The Ministry’s statement emphasized the expectation that the realities on the island should be understood by the United Nations as soon as possible, stating, “The Security Council’s statement on a federal solution is against the principle of impartiality and is unacceptable.”

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs was up in arms on Thursday after the UN Security Council’s latest statement which called for a return to negotiating table to reach a comprehensive and just settlement based on a bicommunal, bizonal federation with political equality, as set out in the relevant security council resolutions.

It said that the statement which was made with the support of the Permanent members of the Security Council who do not hesitate to openly declare their support for the Greek Cypriot side in order to please them, were against the principle of impartiality.

“The Security Council’s statement, which serves the interests of the Greek Cypriot side and imposes its views on the other side, is contrary to the principle of impartiality and is absolutely unacceptable to us” read the statement.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs also said that the Security Council’s calls for the resumption of formal negotiations between the parties within the framework of a previously tried and exhausted formula, stating that the Greek Cypriot side, which has rejected every opportunity for an agreement for the past 50 years, is now trying to deceive the world by appearing to support previously tried and exhausted formulas and is attempting to manipulate the United Nations Security Council in this game.

“The Greek Cypriot side’s only aim is to play for time through initiatives such as the appointment of a United Nations representative in order to prevent the Turkish Cypriot people from engaging with the world,” it said, reminding that the Turkish Cypriot people, who have been forced to live under isolation due to the status quo, had participated in all past and present talks with good intentions and had made every effort necessary to reach an agreement.

It added that no party had the right to impose an exhausted formula on the Turkish Cypriot people who have already proven their goodwill.

“The only way for the Turkish Cypriot people to take their rightful place in the world is through the acceptance of their inherent rights. It is our natural right to demand the recognition of the sovereign equality and equal international status of the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus within the framework of our inherent rights. We expect those who think we will accept any imposition to examine the struggle of the Turkish Cypriot people throughout history and to deliver their inherent rights.”

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs also claimed that the Security Council’s statement was made to please the Greek Cypriot side and stated, “In this regard, we express our disappointment with this unfortunate statement made by the UN Security Council and reiterate our expectation for the realization of the realities on the island by the United Nations as soon as possible.”
