The Department of Antiquities and Museums organized an event on Tuesday to mark International Museums Week being observed from May 18-24.

The event held at the Güzelyurt Train Station Museum brought together youth and children from the area.

In addition to folk dance shows an drama workshop was organised jointly by the European University of Lefke and the Kurtuluş Primary School.

A recently restored train locomotive was also unveiled at the event.

Speaking at the event, Deputy Prime Minister, Minister of Tourism, Culture, Youth and Environment Fikri Ataoğlu who attended the event said that museums added value to the country’s economy.

He underlined the importance of informing the youth about history.

Ataoğlu also said that work was progressing to open a new museum in every major city in the TRNC.

As part of the week-long events, a pottery workshop was held on Monday with students from the Gazi Primary School at the Chimney House (Şömineli Ev) in Gazimağusa under the supervision of ceramic artist Zeka Mazhar.

A drama event was also held in Lefkoşa for the students from the Gönyeli Primary School.
