President Ersin Tatar on Monday said that it was a waste of time to negotiate a federal settlement with a side that did not want Turkish Cypriots.
Tatar was speaking during a visit paid to him by a delegation from the Society of the Turkish Resistance Organisation (TMT).
“The conjuncture has turned in our favour. A strong political will has emerged in favour of a two-state solution. There is no going back from this point. We shall continue to act together with motherland Turkey in full harmony,” he said.
Tatar also criticized the Greek Cypriot leader Nicos Anastasiades who paid tribute to the EOKA terrorist organisation for his remarks concerning the airing of the TV drama series, “Once upon a time in Cyprus.”
President Tatar said that Anastasiades’ remarks that it was not EOKA but the TMT which was a terrorist organisation were a distortion of the truth.
“The late Greek Cypriot Archbishop Makarios had said that the 1960 Cyprus Republic was just a stepping stone to achieving their quest for Enosis or union with Greece,” he reminded, adding that the world had stood by and watched as Turkish Cypriots were massacred by EOKA.
Regarding the TRNC’s position in the Eastern Mediterranean, Tatar said that the TRNC, together with Turkey’s Blue Homeland doctrine had grown stronger in the region.
For his part, the head of the TMT Society Yılmaz Bora said that a federal settlement could only be possible between two equal sides that trusted one another.
“That is why a federal settlement with the Greek Cypriots is not possible,” he said.
Bora also said that it was Greece and the Greek Cypriots who were to blame for the conflict in Cyprus as well as their aspiration to achieve Enosis.
