A handover ceremony for the Presidency of the Parliament took place in the Republic’s Assembly on Thursday.

The National Unity Party (UBP) Güzelyurt MP Ziya Öztürkler, who was elected as the Speaker of the Parliament, took over the role from Zorlu Töre.

During the handover ceremony, Zorlu Töre wished the newly elected Speaker, Ziya Öztürkler, success in his role.

Töre stressed that the main purpose was to serve the people, and he will continue to do so as a member of parliament, adding that positions were temporary.

The newly elected Speaker of the Parliament, Ziya Öztürkler, acknowledged the significant services Zorlu Töre had provided in his dedicated pursuit of their shared cause, describing the transition as a relay race.

Noting that, with his party’s decision to nominate him and the completion of the parliamentary speaker election, he took over the position, Öztürkler stressed that there was no more time to lose.

Stressing that the most important duty of the members of parliament was to pass laws that benefit the people, he pointed out that the parliamentary committees had not been functioning for a long time.

Öztürkler made a call for common sense and cooperation.

He also stressed that their greatest responsibility was to end the chaotic environment and ensure that the Parliament begins functioning as soon as possible.

Expressing gratitude to the National Unity Party (UBP) leader and Prime Minister Ünal Üstel, as well as all the UBP, Democrat Party (DP), and the Rebirth Party (YDP) members of parliament for the trust placed in him regarding his candidacy for the position of Speaker, Öztürkler said, “In the new term, we will continue to work hand in hand for the bright future of our country.”

Öztürkler stressed that they aimed to enter a period where parliament will function effectively and sensibly, passing laws that address the needs of society.

Ziya Öztürkler was elected as Speaker of the Parliament during a vote in the General Assembly, receiving 26 votes in favour and 23 against.
