The capital Lefkoşa hosted the North Cyprus Climate Summit organized by the Centre for Political and Social Research.

The summit, which aims to contribute to the creation of national adaptation and prevention plans for the Climate Crisis, was attended by state and government officials as well as many non-governmental organizations.

The opening speech at the summit was delivered by the Cyprus Turkish Political and Social Research Centre (SİTA) President Özdemir Tokel who pointed at that the current situation in the environment cannot be ignored and added that if no steps are taken then the future of the children will be destroyed.

Deputy Prime Minister, Minister of Tourism, Culture, Youth and Environment Fikri Ataoğlu for his part pointed to the importance of the Climate Summit and stated that the Environment Department is working on this issue.

Ataoğlu asked everyone to fulfil their responsibilities against the climate crisis before it is too late.

The leader of the Republican Turkish Party (CTP) Tufan Erhürman underlined that the work carried out against the climate crisis should be put into practice as soon as possible.

Prime Minister Ünal Üstel said that the climate issue has now reached a crisis point and that the necessary measures should be taken urgently.

Üstel emphasized that the energy interconnection system, on which work has started, will be a big step towards green energy and added that they will fulfil the requirements of the Paris agreement signed on climate.

President Ersin Tatar for his part touched upon the importance of the step taken for the interconnected system and said that electricity will come to the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC) from Türkiye just as water has.

“We are ready to share this with our Greek Cypriot neighbours, so they will also switch to green energy, but I am sure that they will reject this important proposal as they reject everything. They reject all the steps taken for humanity, they reject that there is a State in the north of Cyprus, they reject that there are sovereign people here” said Tatar.

At the end of the event, the Lefkoşa Climate Agreement was signed by President Ersin Tatar, Prime Minister Ünal Üstel, Deputy Prime Minister Fikri Ataoğlu and leader of the Republican Turkish Party Tufan Erhürman.
