Olgun meets with top officials in New York

The President’s Special Representative, Ergün Olgun, who is also in New York due to the 78th United Nations General Assembly held separate meetings with the Deputy Permanent Representative of Switzerland to the UN, Adrian Dominik Hauri, and the Deputy Permanent Representative of the United States to the UN, Ambassador Jeffrey DeLaurentis.

He also met with the Deputy Permanent Representative of the Russian Federation, Ambassador Anna Evstigneeva, and the Deputy Secretary-General of the United Nations, Miroslav Jenca.-

During a meeting at the Swiss Permanent Representation, information was exchanged with Switzerland, a temporary member of the UN Security Council since January 2023, based on the new vision of the Turkish Cypriot side on the Cyprus issue.

In a meeting at the US Permanent Representation, Special Representative Olgun and US Deputy Permanent Representative Ambassador Jeffrey DeLaurentis exchanged views on opportunities for bilateral and regional cooperation, particularly in the context of the effects of regional crises.

Special Representative Olgun told Ambassador DeLaurentis that the main reason why the Cyprus issue has remained unresolved for so many years was that the Greek Cypriot side considers itself the sole owner of the island and, on that basis, does not want to share power with the Turkish Cypriot side.

He also explained the Turkish Cypriot vision for a solution based on sovereign equality and equal international status.

In addition, Olgun, met with the Deputy Permanent Representative of the Russian Federation, Ambassador Anna Evstigneeva at the Permanent Representation of the Russian Federation, and then with the Deputy Secretary-General of the United Nations, Miroslav Jenca, at the United Nations Headquarters.

The Coordinator of Confidence-Building Measures and Bilateral Technical Committees, Güneş Onar, also attended the meetings.

During the meetings, Olgun shared President Ersin Tatar’s new vision for a solution to the Cyprus issue, which has been unresolved for 60 years, alongside regional developments, informing the interlocutors about the latest developments on the island.

During his meeting with the Deputy Secretary-General of the United Nations, Miroslav Jenca, Special Representative Olgun also discussed the consultations regarding President Ersin Tatar’s meeting with the UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres, scheduled for Saturday, September 23.
