The BRTK Director Meryem Özkurt, who issued a message to mark the 8th of March International Working Women’s Day, stated that the day was one which represented the years long struggle in many parts of the world to raise awareness to women’s rights.

Referring to the historic importance of March 8 for ending all forms of violence and discrimination against women, Özkurt said “the struggle that started years ago with the slogan “equal pay for equal work” still continues today. Unfortunately women are still unable to find a place for themselves in work and social life under equal conditions.”

“She said that despite the large number of women working in the media sector, efforts to change the problematic nature of the relationship between women and media have not been successful. The representation of women in the media through their bodies is unfortunately still common. There is an urgent need to reform the media in which women are represented through their opinions, ideas and thoughts. It should not be forgotten that success is achieved by work, not by gender.” Özkurt noted.

She added that press workers and journalists had a duty to promote women’s role in society, the economy and politics, to help women achieve the place they deserve.
