Speaker of the Republic’s Assembly Ziya Öztürkler, held a series of significant meetings in Ankara, including discussions with his counterpart, Speaker of the Turkish Grand National Assembly (TGNA) Numan Kurtulmuş.
Following their meeting, the two leaders addressed a joint press conference emphasizing the enduring bond between Türkiye and the TRNC.
Speaking at the press conference, the Speaker of the Turkish Grand National Assembly Numan Kurtulmuş reaffirmed Türkiye’s steadfast commitment to the TRNC, describing the Cyprus issue as a national cause.
Highlighting the 50-year milestone since the 1974 Peace Operation, he praised the resilience of the Turkish Cypriot people and reiterated Türkiye’s dedication to a two-state solution.
“The recognition of the TRNC by friendly and allied nations is inevitable,” said Kurtulmuş, adding that Türkiye would continue supporting the TRNC’s efforts for stronger international representation.
Kurtulmuş also condemned the ongoing militarization efforts in South Cyprus, including the planned deployment of the Iron Dome defense system in collaboration with Israel.
“We urge for an end to armament. Attempts to disrupt peace in the region will not be tolerated,” he stated.
During the press conference, the Speaker of the Republic’s Assembly Ziya Öztürkler expressed gratitude for Türkiye’s unwavering support, particularly its role as a guarantor state, which he described as vital in the face of regional and global tensions.
“Türkiye’s backing underscores the importance of security for both the TRNC and the region,” he said.
Öztürkler highlighted the cooperation between the TRNC and TGNA, particularly in strengthening bilateral relations and advancing the TRNC’s international representation.
He also acknowledged Türkiye’s efforts at the UN General Assembly, where President Erdoğan has repeatedly called for the recognition of the TRNC and broader diplomatic, political, and economic partnerships.
The speaker noted significant progress, including the TRNC’s observer membership in organizations such as the Organization of Turkic States (OTS) and the Parliamentary Assembly of Turkic-Speaking Countries (TURKPA).
Öztürkler expressed hope for full membership, emphasizing the importance of these platforms for Turkish Cypriots to voice their concerns and aspirations.
Addressing security concerns, Öztürkler reiterated trust in Türkiye’s support, particularly regarding defence measures against potential threats from South Cyprus.
He also reaffirmed the TRNC’s alignment with President Ersin Tatar’s vision of sovereign equality and equal international status for Turkish Cypriots.
Both leaders underscored their commitment to regional peace and pledged to work together to ensure stability and prosperity for the Turkish Cypriot people.
