Speaker of the TRNC Parliament, Ziya Öztürkler, has announced plans to establish an Ad-Hoc Committee to amend the parliamentary bylaws before the move to the new parliamentary building. Öztürkler shared these updates during a programme he attended on BRT.
Reflecting on parliamentary challenges faced in late 2024, Öztürkler emphasized that the Assembly had struggled to function effectively during October and December but recently held consecutive General Assembly meetings, signalling progress.
Öztürkler acknowledged the damage to internal harmony and legal principles during the parliamentary speaker election period, stating his focus over the past two months has been to restore functionality to the Assembly’s organs.
He stressed the importance of impartiality and fairness for the Speaker’s role, declaring, “Our primary goal is to recover what Parliament has lost.”
The Speaker confirmed that the Assembly is expected to relocate to its new premises within the first quarter of 2025.
Ahead of this move, efforts will focus on revising the parliamentary bylaws to align with the modern and functional design of the new building.
These revisions aim to address inefficiencies and support the institution’s operational needs.
Öztürkler highlighted the goal of implementing a revised set of bylaws within 1–1.5 months, enabling the Parliament to function more effectively.
“Our aim is to make the new building a place that serves the public’s benefit to the fullest,” he noted.
He also underscored the necessity of broader organizational changes, including adjustments to staffing and operational structures.
To this end, Öztürkler proposed establishing an Ad-Hoc Committee comprising experienced staff and parliamentary leaders.
The committee would focus on adapting bylaws and other necessary reforms in collaboration with political party group leaders.
In addition to procedural changes, Öztürkler reiterated the Assembly’s commitment to enacting legislation that serves the public interest. He called on parliamentarians to prioritize work in committees to advance laws that benefit society.
Reflecting on key developments in 2024, Öztürkler highlighted Türkiye’s President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan’s call at the UN General Assembly for the recognition of the TRNC, as well as the TRNC’s observer membership in the Organization of Turkic States and its growing role in TÜRKPA.
These milestones, he stated, underscore the TRNC’s expanding international presence and opportunities.
