Speaker of the Republic’s Assembly Ziya Öztürkler commemorated all the revered martyrs to whom the state and sovereignty are indebted, as well as those who fell during the January 27-28 Resistance, and saluted the veterans with respect.
The Speaker of the Republic’s Assembly Ziya Öztürkler issued a message on the anniversary of the January 27-28 Resistance against British Colonial rule.
In his message, Öztürkler said “When the Greek Cypriots, who saw the British administration of Cyprus as an opportunity to realize their Enosis dreams, started to take steps for Enosis by making use of the pro-British attitude in their favor, the Turkish Cypriot People, who carried out the resistance of January 27-28, 1958, demonstrated a remarkable example of struggle by opposing both the British Colonial Administration and the Enosis-minded Greek Cypriot mentality.”
He said that during the resistance of January 27-28, the Turkish Cypriot people rallied against the British colonial administration and demanded the partition of the island and showed that they protect their sovereignty in a free and independent way, this led to 7 martyrs and many wounded.
“On this occasion, I commemorate with mercy and gratitude all our martyrs to whom we owe our state and sovereignty, and our heroes who were martyred in the January 27-28 Resistance, and I greet our veterans with respect,” said Öztürkler.
