The Speaker of the Republic’s Assembly Zorlu Töre emphasized that August 8 is one of the most important dates symbolizing the courage and will of the Turkish Cypriot people.
The Speaker of the Republic’s Assembly Zorlu Töre issued a message to mark the anniversary of the August 8 Erenköy Resistance.
Töre stated that they are proud to realize the 60th anniversary of the August 8 Erenköy Resistance, one of the most glorious resistances in the struggle for existence of the Turkish Cypriot people, and stated that the August 8 Erenköy Resistance is the most important symbol of the courage and will of the Turkish Cypriots.
Reminding that in 1964, approximately 700 Turkish Cypriot students studying abroad put their lives on the line to protect their homeland and put up an honourable struggle, Töre said, “Our heroic young people joined hands with the people of Erenköy and displayed an epic heroism against Greek Cypriot attacks. With this resistance, the Turkish Cypriot people did not submit to the attacks and showed the whole world that they will never be under captivity.”
Pointing out that there are very important lessons to be learned from the sacrifices made by young people for the continuation of the existence of the Turkish Cypriot people on the island, Töre concluded his message with the following words: “It is the responsibility of all of us to understand and convey to future generations that these days have been achieved through the determined struggle and resistance of the Turkish Cypriot people.
On the 60th anniversary of the Glorious Erenköy Resistance, I commemorate all our martyrs, especially Martyr Captain Cengiz Topel, with mercy and our veterans with gratitude” said Töre.
