The Speaker of Parliament Zorlu Töre issued a message to mark the anniversary of the Glorious Erenköy Resistance.

In his message Töre wrote “Erenköy; It has been an important turning point in the process that brought us freedom and pioneered the resistance and struggle for existence put forth by a handful of determined young people, the Turkish Resistance Organization and our people, who swore that the Turkish Cypriots would exist in these lands.

“With the vow that Cyprus is also our homeland and we will not be enslaved in these lands” Töre said that they are proudly celebrating the 59th anniversary of the Glorious Erenköy Resistance, which left its mark on history as the ‘Resistance Epic’.

Explaining that the Erenköy Resistance of August 8, 1964, which was an epic created by university students who abandoned their education abroad and went to Erenköy together with the people of the region to fight for their existence and national cause, was the first landing operation in Cyprus, Töre said that it was also the first operation in which Türkiye actually used the right of intervention provided by the Treaty of Guarantee.

“I would like to congratulate those who clung to each other in poverty and despair, who managed to come out of despair with an epic spirit of solidarity, who protected their homeland with the unprecedented mucahids (fighters) spirit, who left their education and ran to the resistance in Erenköy.

I wish mercy to all our martyrs and well-being to our veterans, and I reiterate my belief that the spirit of independence and resistance will continue to be our guide” wrote Töre while concluding his message.
