The Speaker of the Republic’s Assembly, Zorlu Töre, also reacted to the United Nations Security Council’s statement on the Cyprus issue, which included a proposal for a federal solution.

“At this point, we will not compromise on our equal sovereignty and our state” Töre stressed.

The Speaker of the Republic’s Assembly, Zorlu Töre, issued a written statement on Thursday regarding the statement of the United Nations Security Council on the Cyprus issue.

Noting that despite the knowledge that the foundation of the federation solution model, which began to be negotiated 46 years ago, was based on equality, it has never been internalized by the Greek Cypriot Administration and has been rejected every time, Töre said that the call of the United Nations Security Council to return to federation negotiations without taking these realities into account showed that there is no change in the United Nations’ stance that encourages the perpetuation of the problem rather than finding a solution to the Cyprus issue.

“If an agreement had been reached in the federation model, which emphasizes equality as a fundamental element and is also highlighted by the UN parameters, a structure based on the equality of the two sides would have been formed. If the ultimate goal is the partnership of both sides on equal terms, why is there still a strong opposition to the equality of one side? When one side does not accept the equality of the other side, but insists on an equality-based solution model, does the UN not question its own sincerity regarding equality and justice?” Töre asked.

Noting that once again, the Turkish Cypriots were faced with a solution model that has not been able to bring about a resolution for 46 years, with a Greek Cypriot side that does not accept equality, lacks the intention and motivation for a solution, and only appears to negotiate, the Parliamentary Speaker said that proposing to enter a process where there will not be equal conditions and status with the Greek Cypriots is insincere when one side, including the United Nations and other international platforms, can make its voice heard while the other side faces embargoes on its voice.

“Just like we question the fate of the following statement made by former UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan immediately after the referendum: We must do our best to ensure that the Turkish Cypriots, who have shown their will for a solution through their votes, are no longer punished. At this point, we will not compromise on our equal sovereignty and our state” Töre added.
