The Speaker of the Republic’s Assembly Zorlu Töre issued a message on the 50th anniversary of the coup d’état carried out on July 15, 1974 by Greek nationalists with the understanding of Enosis, backed by the junta administration in Greece.
In his message Töre said, “In the fascist bloody coup, hundreds of Greek Cypriots were killed and attacks and massacres were committed against the Turkish Cypriot people. Peace and tranquillity came to Cyprus thanks to the Turkish Peace Operation carried out by Motherland Türkiye on July 20, 1974 by using its international rights arising from the Treaties of Guarantee”.
“The Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus, which was established by the Turkish Cypriot people, who have been living free and independent in these lands for a very long time, using their right to self-determination, will live forever” said Töre.
He also issued a message in honour of the July 15 Democracy and National Unity Day.
In his message, Töre said that the great Turkish nation has fought, resisted and never compromised its freedom throughout its history.
Reminding that the Turkish nation also achieved an important victory against the treacherous coup attempt on July 15, 2016, one of the most insidious attacks in history, Töre said, “In the face of the coup attempt, the heroic Turkish people showed the whole world that nothing can be above the national will. I respectfully commemorate our 251 military, police and civilian citizens who were martyred for this cause, and I express my condolences to their families and our Motherland Türkiye. The national will determined through democracy can never be given up, and the national will cannot be abolished through dictatorship. As the great leader Atatürk said, “Sovereignty belongs to the Nation Unconditionally!”
