Parliament has cancelled its sessions today and tomorrow due to the upcoming İsias Hotel hearing in Adıyaman.
Prime Minister Ünal Üstel, along with Tufan Erhürman, Leader of the Main Opposition Republican Turkish Party (CTP), and members of the Temporary and Special Committee on Monitoring the Legal and Judicial Processes Related to the Earthquake in Türkiye, will travel to Adıyaman for the proceedings.
The delegation includes members from various political parties, led by UBP MP Oğuzhan Hasipoğlu, with CTP MP Ongun Talat serving as the Committee’s Vice President. Other members include UBP MPs Yasemin Öztürk and Sadık Gardiyanoğlu, Deputy Speaker of the Assembly and CTP MP Fazilet Özdenefe, DP MP Serhat Akpınar, YDP MP Talip Atalay, and Independent MP Ayşegül Baybars.
The most recent session of the General Assembly took place on October 18, following a series of postponements since October 7. The agenda focused on the election of the Speaker of the Assembly.
In that session, UBP’s candidate, Güzelyurt MP Ziya Öztürkler, did not secure the necessary majority in the first four rounds of voting but was elected Speaker in the fifth round with 26 votes in favour and 23 against.
However, opposition MPs challenged the validity of three ballots, submitting their objections in writing to the Speaker’s Office. These objections are expected to be reviewed first by the Assembly’s Advisory Council and then by the Presidential Board after the delegation returns from Adıyaman.
The decision to suspend parliamentary sessions underscores the priority given to the legal proceedings surrounding the tragic collapse of the İsias Hotel, where many lives were lost during the devastating earthquake on February 6, 2023.
