The Republic’s Assembly was represented at the Inter-Parliamentary Union General Assembly Meeting in Geneva.

The delegation consisting of National Unity Party MP (UBP) Oğuzhan Hasipoğlu, Republican Turkish Party MP (CTP) Asım Akansoy and Democrat Party MP (DP) Serhat Akpınar returned home after completing their contacts.

Evaluating their meetings in Geneva UBP MP Oğuzhan Hasipoğlu stated that the meeting was important in order to put the Cyprus issue on the table and to defend the interests of the Turkish Cypriot people.

He stated that the meeting, which they attended together with Greek Cypriots, was the most important meeting after the meetings held at the leaders’ level.

Stating that Swiss deputies who moderated the meeting suggested that Turkish Cypriot and Greek Cypriot deputies should come together more often and work in extraordinary situations, Hasipoğlu said that the Turkish Cypriot side welcomed this suggestion adding that however this suggestion was rejected by Greek Cypriot MPs.

“We have seen here onfce again that the Cyprus issue is a status issue. Greek Cypriot MPs do not see us in an equal status; they see us as a minority. This attitude of theirs reveals once again how justified and legitimate our position is,” said Hasipoğlu.

CTP MP Asım Akansoy for his part said that during their two day visit they had held fruitful contacts with delegations of other countries.

Referring to the meeting between Turkish Cypriot and Greek Cypriot political parties, Akansoy noted that the new solution process, which started with the contacts of the UN Personal Envoy of the UN Secretary General, should be supported by the political parties.

Emphasizing that the solution axis on the Cyprus issue should be established through the UN parameters, Akansoy emphasized the importance of ensuring this in a secure and functional manner.

DP MP Serhat Akpınar for his part in his assessment of the visit, stated that they expect the proposals they have put forward since last year regarding the Cyprus settlement process to be accepted this year.

Describing the rejection of the proposals by the Greek Cypriot political party representatives as “disappointing”, Akpınar added that they held bilateral meetings with the delegations of Bahrain, Pakistan and Azerbaijan and invited the officials of these countries to the TRNC.
