Peanuts were sown in Güzelyurt as part of an experimental study to see whether the area is suitable for peanut cultivation.

Within the framework of peanut adaptation trial studies carried out by the Agricultural Research Institute of the Ministry of Agriculture and Natural Resources together with Türkiye’s General Directorate of Agricultural Research and Policy, five different types of peanuts, one local, were planted in Güzelyurt Wednesday.

The Minister of Agriculture and Natural Resources Dursun Oğuz, who examined the process on-site, said that the Ministry has been carrying out studies to cultivate new agricultural crops and plants such as chickpeas, sesame and peanuts, which despite being suitable to be grown in the country are not imported.

He pointed out that farmers will be provided with special grants if they choose to try growing these crops in the TRNC. Minister Oğuz said the findings of the study will be shared with farmers once the first yield is collected.
