The Pile Commission on Thursday said that any project concerning the use of the Pile area cannot proceed without the approval of the Turkish Cypriot side.

The commission, established in 1997, convened on Thursday to ensure the necessary coordination for the construction of the Yiğitler-Pile road and follow up on issues related to the village of Pile and its surroundings

According to a written statement issued on Thursday, the Pile Commission drew attention to the fact that the road project was initiated with the aim of addressing the grievances suffered by Turkish Cypriots residing in Pile for decades.

“According to the mutual understanding reached after intense negotiations conducted with the United Nations Peacekeeping Force, the Yiğitler road project will continue in order to be completed at the earliest possible date while preserving the Turkish Cypriot side’s just position,” the statement read.

The commission added that as outlined in the scope of the agreement, the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC) will maintain its constructive attitude towards projects that can contribute to the development of the Pile community, that respects the status of Pile, and are implemented with the consultation of all relevant parties, as it has done in the past.
