The Speaker of the Republic’s Assembly Zorlu Töre stated that they are concerned about the efforts to establish a helicopter base in the region of Tatlısu in South Cyprus, in accordance with the military agreement signed between South Cyprus and the United States of America.

Töre emphasized that this would serve no purpose other than the destruction of peace and stability in the Eastern Mediterranean.

The Speaker of the Republic’s Assembly Zorlu Töre evaluated the military agreement signed between South Cyprus and the United States.

He said that studies are being carried out to establish helicopter bases as well as a land base in the Tatlısu region in accordance with the agreement and that they are following these studies with concern.

Töre invited the parties to reconsider the military agreement and to take steps to maintain stability and peace in Cyprus and the Eastern Mediterranean.

“It should be known that some of the leading countries of the European Union and the United States are the greatest cause of the armament in the war and violent events in our near geography,” said Töre.

Stating that the agreement will increase the likelihood of new tensions in the region, as well as being a threat to the neighbouring Greek Cypriot Administration of South Cyprus, Töre said, “While it has been clearly understood in many processes that nothing can be achieved through armament on the island, the possibility of the agreement made to bring bloodshed to the region should always be kept in mind.”

“The activities carried out by the Greek Cypriot Administration of South Cyprus have once again demonstrated the importance and indispensability of Türkiye’s active and effective guarantee on the island” said Töre adding that agreements that would put the island in danger are not supported by the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC) or the Turkish Cypriot people.

“I urge the parties to reconsider the military agreement and to take steps to maintain stability and peace on our island and in the Eastern Mediterranean” said Töre.
