Prime Minister Ünal Üstel issued a message celebrating 11 July Press Day, emphasizing the historical importance of newspapers and journalists in the struggle for the existence of the Turkish Cypriot people.
He affirmed the government’s commitment to supporting media professionals in overcoming any challenges they face.
Prime Minister Ünal Üstel, in his message for 11 July Press Day, congratulated media professionals on their special day.
Reminding that 11 July marks the 135th anniversary of the first Turkish newspaper in Cyprus, “Saded,” published by a Turkish Cypriot, Üstel noted that the Turkish Cypriot press has endured difficult conditions since its inception.
He highlighted that the press continues to be the voice of the people on all platforms, contributing to the struggle for freedom and democracy.
“We cannot forget the historical significance of our newspapers and journalists in the existential struggle of the Turkish Cypriot people,” Üstel stated.
He emphasized that through the efforts of the media, the spirit of resistance among the people was maintained, morale and motivation were provided, and the voice of the people, who sought to be eradicated, was heard worldwide.
Üstel remarked that today, the press faces a new era with the rapid development of technology, which has accelerated the flow of information and made the media environment more complex.
In this new environment, Üstel stressed the increased importance of adhering to ethical values and principles of accurate and impartial journalism.
He stated: “Our media professionals must respect individual rights, work with a sense of responsibility, and inform the public in light of universal values. As a government, we reiterate our support for our media professionals in overcoming any challenges they encounter. On this occasion, I extend my best wishes to all our media professionals on 11 July Press Day and wish them success in their careers.”
