Prime Minister Ünal Üstel has joined the growing chorus of criticism against Netflix’s upcoming series “Famagusta” which takes place during the 1974 Cyprus Peace Operation.

Expressing his outrage, Üstel denounced the series as a distortion of history and promoting Greek Cypriot propaganda, pointing out that the portrayal of Türkiye as an occupier is unacceptable.

In a statement posted on his social media account, Prime Minister Üstel highlighted the ongoing disinformation campaign by the Greek Cypriot administration, which he claims has been distorting the just cause of the Turkish Cypriots for over 60 years without pause.

Üstel criticized the forthcoming Netflix series, which is set to premiere in September, stating: “This series is yet another attempt by the Greek Cypriot administration to distort the reality of the last 60 years on the island. It is filled with Greek Cypriot propaganda and portrays Türkiye as an occupier. Accepting such a distorted portrayal of the Cyprus Peace Operation is impossible.”

In his post, Üstel further elaborated that Turkish Cypriots had experienced genocides that were documented in official world history, corroborated by admissions from Greek Cypriot politicians themselves.

“Our stories are not fictional tales filled with pain, oppression, and Greek Cypriot atrocities; they are real-life experiences. Therefore, we will not stand by and watch while they deceive the world with films and distort the facts on the island, undermining the rightful cause of the Turkish Cypriots. We will not sit and wait. We will take all necessary precautions and steps,” he said.
