Prime Minister Ünal Üstel issued a message honouring the late Bülent Ecevit, former Turkish Prime Minister and leader during the 1974 Cyprus Peace Operation, on the 18th anniversary of his passing.
Üstel expressed deep gratitude for Ecevit’s pivotal role in securing safe and peaceful lands for the Turkish Cypriot people and emphasized the lasting impact of Ecevit’s leadership on their independence movement.
In his message, Prime Minister Üstel referred to Ecevit as a beacon of hope during one of the most challenging periods in Turkish Cypriot history, underscoring his determination and exceptional leadership in defending the rights of Turkish Cypriots.
“Ecevit, by taking responsibility during the Cyprus Peace Operation, earned a lasting place in the hearts of both Turkish Cypriots and the Turkish nation. His dedication to the Cyprus cause has been an inspiration to us over the years,” Üstel said.
Üstel further stated, “Thanks to him, the Turkish Cypriot people were able to attain lands where they could live in peace and security, marking a significant step in our independence struggle.
Ecevit not only ensured the safety of the Turkish Cypriots but also defended their right to live as a nation with their own identity and freedom.”
The Prime Minister reaffirmed the TRNC’s commitment to upholding Ecevit’s legacy and continuing to advocate for the rightful cause of the Turkish Cypriot people, emphasizing the unbreakable bond between Türkiye and the TRNC.
“As we remember Ecevit with respect, we affirm that his fighting spirit will forever remain a part of the Turkish Cypriot people’s existential struggle.”
