Prime Minister Ünal Üstel welcomed the call made by Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan at the 78th United Nations General Assembly to “recognize the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus.”

In a written statement he issued on Tuesday, Prime Minister Ünal Üstel said, “On behalf of myself and our people, I extend my heartfelt thanks to Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan for his call, which once again echoed the strong voice of the Turkish Cypriot people at the United Nations General Assembly and conveyed our people’s voice and just cause to the whole world.”

Noting that as Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan stated in his speech, the Turkish Cypriot people have taken all sincere steps towards a just, lasting, and sustainable solution to the Cyprus issue, which has been ongoing for 60 years, the Premier stressed that the realities that have emerged after all these years clearly show that a solution cannot be reached on a federal basis in Cyprus.

Üstel also added that the world should now see the realities of the island, and based on these realities, should recognize the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus.
