PM Üstel inspects damage in Çayırova caused by tornado

Prime Minister Ünal Üstel has said that the government will take all necessary steps to address the damage caused by a tornado which struck the village on Saturday causing extensive damage to 23 homes leaving many residents in need of assistance..

Üstel who visited the village on Monday offered his support and expressed his well-wishes to those affected.

During his visit, Üstel also visited the village school which also sustained damage, and received updates from officials on the situation.

In a statement to the press following his visit, Prime Minister Üstel extended his sympathies to residents of the İskele and Karpaz regions who were impacted by the tornado.

He noted that several homes were damaged, and the artificial turf at Çayırova Primary School’s football pitch was rendered unusable.

Üstel said, “We have assessed the situation to determine what the state can do to help.”

Reflecting on the events of the day, Üstel remarked that while heavy rain had affected Lefkoşa, making the party congress difficult to organize, the tornado had caused severe damage in the Çayırova area.

“We wanted to visit the region with officials to ensure that our people are not left alone in this difficult time,” he added.

The Prime Minister emphasized that the recovery process would be initiated immediately, with Mehmetçik-Büyükkonuk Mayor Fatma Çimen Tuğlu and İskele District Governor Ertuğrul Toroslu already on-site to support the residents.

Mayor Tuğlu stated that all available resources were being mobilized to assist the community, with municipal teams working intensively in the area.

Meanwhile, Çayırova Village Head Ahmet Ercüment reported that many homes and livestock shelters had been damaged, with even century-old trees affected by the tornado.

Mehmet Ali Keleş, the principal of Çayırova Primary School, explained that they were working at the school on Saturday when the severe weather hit.

Although the school building was narrowly missed, the tornado caused significant damage to the artificial turf field used by students.
