Prime Minister Ünal Üstel issued a message on the 60th anniversary of the epic Erenköy Resistance.

Expressing the pride of reaching the 60th anniversary of the epic Erenköy Resistance, which is one of the most defining elements of the Turkish Cypriot struggle history, the Premier commemorated the martyrs who sacrificed their lives in the Erenköy Resistance, where university students and young people of all views dedicated themselves to their country, and expressed gratitude to the veterans.

Üstel noted that the epic struggle demonstrated in Erenköy was one of the most remarkable examples of ensuring that the Turkish Cypriots live under their own state structure, in freedom and security today.

Stressing that the struggle of 500 university students, alongside the local people, will continue to be remembered as one of the most significant cornerstones of the Turkish Cypriot existence, he said, “The Erenköy Resistance retains its historical importance as it also includes a strategic move where our motherland Türkiye provided air support within its guarantee and intervention rights.”

Also commemorating Martyr Pilot Lieutenant Cengiz Topel, who lost his life due to Greek brutality, with mercy, the Prime Minister stressed that the Turkish Cypriot people will continue to exist on these lands forever, defying those who seek to destroy them with brutality and weapons, and will persist in living their state with faith, determination, and fearlessness.

“On this meaningful day, I once again remember with mercy our dear martyrs, all fighters, and soldiers who lost their lives in the struggle for the existence of the Turkish Cypriot people, and with gratitude, I honour all our veterans. The Erenköy Resistance will always guide us with its spirit of existence and freedom” Üstel added.
