In a remarkable display of democracy, Ünal Üstel has been re-elected as the leader of the National Unity Party (UBP) during its 23rd Ordinary Congress held at the Atatürk Sports Hall in Lefkoşa on Saturday.
With a turnout of 10,171 members out of approximately 20,000, Üstel secured 6,555 votes, reaffirming UBP’s status as the largest political party in the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC).
The final results were announced early on Sunday morning as voting ended at midnight on Saturday due to the high turnout.
The congress, marked by unprecedented participation, concluded with a total of 10,134 votes cast.
Alongside Üstel’s victory, Hasan Taçoy received 3,284 votes, and Ahmet Melih Karavelioğlu garnered 121 votes, while 176 ballots were deemed invalid.
Üstel’s share of the votes amounted to 65.8%, with Taçoy at 33.0% and Karavelioğlu at 1.2%.
Following the announcement of his victory, Üstel accepted congratulations from party members, cabinet ministers, and his family before delivering a heartfelt thank-you speech.
He emphasized that the congress represented a significant moment for the party and a new beginning, noting that it served as a strong message about UBP’s magnitude and unity.
“Once again, it has been proven that UBP is the largest party in the TRNC,” Üstel stated, adding that there were no losers in this election—the true winners were the people and the TRNC. He reaffirmed the party’s commitment to continue its service to the public until 2027, promising to complete ongoing reforms and projects.
Acknowledging the challenging weather conditions, Üstel praised the attendees for their dedication, stating that their presence sent a powerful message of solidarity. He thanked all candidates and members for their contributions to the democratic process.
Reflecting on the recent congresses, which spanned about two and a half months, Üstel expressed gratitude, citing the commitment to serve the TRNC and the determination to move forward.
He concluded his speech emotionally, reiterating, “We will not stop; we will continue to serve the people of the TRNC.”
Meanwhile, President Ersin Tatar congratulated Üstel for his win.
Members of the party’s 70 member assembly was also determined on Sunday.
