The leader of the National Unity Party (UBP), Prime Minister Ünal Üstel, made important statements to the BRT on a special program this morning.

Üstel stated that whatever decision the members make at the congress will come to fruition.

The leader of the National Unity Party (UBP) and Prime Minister Ünal Üstel participated in a special broadcast on BRT on Wednesday and made statements regarding current issues.

In response to a question about the UBP’s congress process, Üstel reminded that party members entrusted him with the task as someone with extensive experience and knowledge, considering him as a senior member of the party.

The Premier said that since the day they took office, they prioritized infrastructure and projects that had yet to be completed, while maintaining unity and cohesion within the party.

“We did not deviate from our promises, worked with our minister and deputy friends, ensured unity and solidarity in the party, collaborated with our coalition partners with 29 deputies, and left our mark on the country” he said.

Noting that he assumed office in 2022 and has served as the longest-standing prime minister, Üstel pointed out that short-term governments were unable to complete projects and produce the necessary projects for the people.

Reminding that they took office during a time when global economic values were shifting, Prime Minister Üstel said, “While doing all this, we worked not only to ensure unity and solidarity within the party but also to achieve national unity and cohesion. We tried to pass laws in consultation with the opposition and cooperated with them on some laws. We focused on completing unfinished projects, reforms, and the laws needed by the people and proceeded in that direction.”

Üstel also reminded that they prioritized municipal reforms and the Municipalities Law, passing it through the General Assembly of Parliament to strengthen municipalities that were unable to even pay their employees.

Noting that despite opposition they reduced the number of municipalities from 28 to 18, thus alleviating their financial difficulties, he stated, “Even the municipalities that do not belong to the UBP are thanking us. This means we did the right thing, and we will continue to do so.”

Stressing that they will continue to serve the public both in power and with stability, Üstel said, “When we talk about stability to our people, some groups interpret it differently. Let them compare what was done in 10 years with what has been accomplished in 2.5 years. What we have achieved with our partners is evident.”

Stating that they had not let the public suffer under the pressure of the rising cost of living and that they had made adjustments for a balanced income distribution in the country, the Premier added that they will continue to do whatever is necessary.

Also touching on the completed projects, Üstel mentioned the Ercan Airport, which was supposed to be finished in four years but had remained incomplete for a long time.

He noted that they, as the government, prioritized the project, and with the support of motherland Türkiye, managed to open the airport.

Üstel also added that the airport, now operational for a year and a half, has reached the expected number of passengers, and large-body aircraft have started to land.

The Premier further explained that work has begun on constructing the cloverleaf interchange on the Lefkoşa Ring Road, and by April 2025, the interchange will be completed, easing traffic at the Gönyeli roundabout and in Lefkoşa.

He stated that they were working with all their efforts to solve the energy problem in the country and that they will resolve it in cooperation with Turkish Vice President Cevdet Yılmaz and Minister of Energy and Natural Resources Alparslan Bayraktar.

Noting that 7 out of 8 mobile generators at the Teknecik Power Plant are now operational and that 5 of these generators were donated by Türkiye, he also noted that an additional 100 kilowatts of power have been supplied to the electricity authority.

Reminding that they had signed a protocol with Türkiye to bring electricity via cable, and feasibility reports are being prepared on this matter, which will be shared in the coming days, Üstel said, “By 2029, we will have completely solved the energy problem in the country. We will continue to consult with the motherland and, if necessary, proceed by outsourcing services.”

Explaining that services from the two seaports in the country are being conducted online, allowing the Ministry of Economy to monitor everything coming in and out of customs, he added that the Ministry of Economy was working on conducting inspections in markets to regulate what enters and exits.

He also noted that a consortium was formed with internet providers in the country, and within approximately two years, the entire country will be equipped with fiber optic cables, Üstel said, “This will gradually enable the e-government system to begin functioning, eliminating the inefficiency in bureaucracy.”

On road projects in the country, Üstel highlighted that they have constructed roads in the western part of Girne using financial resources, greatly easing traffic.

“Now it’s time for the Girne-Çatalköy road, which will soon be put out to tender. The Karpaz Zafer Burnu road will also be put out to tender next month, and we will bring it to a better condition” he added.

UBP leader and Prime Minister Ünal Üstel also stressed that the elections will take place in 2027 and that they will continue to serve until then.
