President Ersin Tatar sent a congratulatory message to Natalie Süleyman, who has been elected as the Deputy Speaker of the Parliament of the Australian state of Victoria.
In his message President Ersin Tatar wrote “Your success continues to inspire thousands of Turkish Cypriots living in Australia.”
According to a presidential statement, President Tatar expressed his happiness at the fact that a person of Turkish Cypriot origin has for the first time been elected to a prestigious position such as Deputy Speaker of the Assembly, and said that encouraging people from different cultural backgrounds to take part in various government and senior positions is important for democracy and human rights.
President Tatar reminded that despite the international community’s promise in 2004 that the unfair isolation imposed on the Turkish Cypriot people would be lifted, direct trade and direct flights with the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus are continuing to be prevented.
Touching upon the Cyprus issue, President Tatar said that with the full support of the Republic of Türkiye, the new policy of the Turkish Cypriot side for the cooperation of two states living side by side on the basis of sovereignty and with the acceptance of equal international status, only then a fair, sustainable and lasting agreement in Cyprus is possible.
Noting that the Greek Cypriot side has yet to respond to the cooperation proposals made by the Turkish Cypriot side, President Tatar wished Süleyman success in her new position and reiterated that her success continues to inspire thousands of Turkish Cypriots living in Australia.
