The 59th anniversary of the heroic Baf Resistance is being observed today.President Ersin Tatar issued a written message on Wednesday marking the day.

President Ersin Tatar issued a written message on the occasion of March 9, Baf Resistance and Martyrs’ Day.

“While the Turkish Cypriot people were massacred in the Bloody Christmas attacks launched on December 21, 1963 by the fascist terrorist organization EOKA with the target of Enosis, all Turkish regions throughout the island, especially Lefkoşa’s Turkish quarter were subjected to severe attacks. The goal of the Greek Cypriot leadership was to break the Turkish Cypriot resistance and make Cyprus a Hellenic Island” the President noted in his message.

“One of the regions exposed to heavy attacks was the Turkish region of Baf and Turkish Cypriot villages. While Turkish Cypriots in Baf and their mujahids showed an epic resistance against these attacks, the price of this was blood and life. Today, on the 59th anniversary of the Baf Resistance, I once again commemorate our martyrs with mercy and gratitude, and greet our veterans with respect” Tatar said.

“The heroic and self-sacrificing Turkish Cypriots, under the harshest conditions of those dark days, did not bow to the Greek Cypriots and waged an epic struggle under the leadership of the Turkish Resistance Organization (TMT) and with the support of motherland Türkiye” the President stressed.

“As I have always underlined, we are in favour of a fair, sustainable and lasting agreement in Cyprus. The way to this agreement is not a solution based on a federal basis, that cannot be realized, but our solution proposal based on the existence of two separate sovereign equal states. This solution proposal, which is also supported by the most powerful and largest country in the region, motherland Türkiye, is the most realistic solution that will benefit Cyprus and the region. We will not sit at the negotiating table until our equal sovereignty and equal international status is recognized” Tatar added.
