President Ersin Tatar extended his congratulations to media professionals on the occasion of 11 July Press Day.
In his message, President Tatar highlighted the significant role that the Turkish Cypriot press has played in the struggle for freedom and existence, emphasizing that the services provided by the press are unforgettable.
Reminding that 11 July marks the anniversary of the publication of the first Turkish newspaper in Cyprus, “SADED,” President Ersin Tatar noted, “As we commemorate this day, we reflect on the 135-year history of the Turkish Cypriot press.”
He pointed out that the Turkish Cypriot press has undertaken crucial roles in enlightening the public and guiding them during both the British Colonial Administration and the years of struggle, despite facing threats and pressures.
He stressed that the contributions of the press during these times cannot be forgotten.
“It is essential for the media, which contributes to the development of democracy, plurality, and all kinds of ideas, to operate impartially, accurately, and in line with the principles of press ethics while enlightening the public. Any form of pressure and intervention on the media is unacceptable,” he noted.
Tatar also said that he was aware of the challenges faced by our media professionals as they expand globally with the technological capabilities they possess today.
“Overcoming these challenges and creating a more modern working environment for our media professionals working under difficult conditions are among our responsibilities. The dedication shown by our media and press members during the pandemic to ensure the public’s right to information is commendable. With heartfelt gratitude, I celebrate the 11 July Press Day of all media professionals who have conveyed the voice of our people to the world and ensured the public’s right to information for over a century,” he concluded.
