News of a Turkish Cypriot girl being harassed and assaulted in South Cyprus has caused outrage across the country.

Asya Karaali, a Turkish Cypriot young woman, was subjected to harassment and violence by three Greek Cypriot youths while she was having fun with her friends in Ayia Napa.

As a result of the attack, Karaali had her front two teeth broken, sustained a fractured finger and bruises to her face.

In a statement issued on Monday, President Ersin Tatar declared that such incidents, which undermine the atmosphere of peace on the island, were unacceptable and said they are following up the matter closely.

Tatar conveyed on Monday his get-well wishes to Asya Karaali, who was injured as a result of an attack in South Cyprus, over the phone.

He said that he had instructed the Presidency’s Technical Committee on Crime and Criminal Matters to closely monitor the heinous attack on Asya Karaali and added that he will continue to follow up on the grave incident.
