President Tatar evaluates UNSC statement

The road project prepared to improve the lives of the citizens of the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC) living in Pile and to facilitate transportation to the territories of the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC) through the village of Yiğitler remains on the agenda.

The United Nations Security Council (UNSC), in a statement following its meeting, requested flexibility from all parties and expressed concern about the road construction.

Evaluating the decision, President Ersin Tatar said that the Security Council’s statement was unfortunate and unacceptable.

Tatar stressed that the United Nations Security Council, even on a humanitarian issue like road construction, driven by the noise from the Greek Cypriot side instead of considering the overall needs of the Turkish Cypriot People, once again proved to be a part of the problem, not a contributor to the solution on the Cyprus issue.

In a written statement issued on Tuesday President Ersin Tatar said, that the road issue for the Turkish Cypriots living in Pile was one that the TRNC government had been voicing for years and that the residents of the village were expecting and supporting a solution to the problem.

“However, despite all our well-intentioned approaches, we have not been able to reach a conclusion in our negotiations with the UN, and we have begun to feel that we are being dragged along without progress. As a result, realizing that the UN has no intention of approaching the issue constructively, we on August 18 decided to initiate work to expand and improve the Pile-Yiğitler road. However, UN Peacekeepers attempted to obstruct work to be carried out within our own territory and despite all our warnings, the Peacekeeping Force, who refused to leave the area, escalated the situation by resorting to the use of physical force against our people who were trying to carry out their duties. As a result, eight of our police officers were slightly injured, he said.

Tatar said the fact that the United Nations Security Council had completely disregarded the facts in its last statement is intriguing enough to question the purpose of this organization and who it truly serves.

“Even on a humanitarian matter such as the construction of a road, the United Nations Security Council, by considering the commotion created by the Greek Cypriot side instead of taking into account the overall needs of the Turkish Cypriot People, has once again proven to be one of the main reasons for the unresolved Cyprus issue,” Tatar noted.

He also added that it was due to this misguided and biased UN mindset that since March 4, 1964, the Greek Cypriots had chosen not to reach an agreement but rather to stay on the path of Enosis in Cyprus.

“I emphatically highlight that the Security Council’s statement is unfortunate and unacceptable for us,” the president said.

Tatar also pointed out that while the United Nations should be neutral it has chosen to continue its longstanding mistake by adopting a pro-Greek Cypriot stance.

“We will uphold our peaceful approach and never compromise from our equal sovereign rights. We will continue to progress on the path we have chosen. The utmost importance for us lies in the rights and interests of our people and nation. With this understanding, we will also fulfil this humanitarian demand of our people,” Tatar said.

The president also expressed his gratitude to Türkiye which continues to support the Turkish Cypriot people on all matters.
