President Ersin Tatar invited the spiritual leader of the Catholic world Pope Francis who is in South Cyprus for a three-day official visit to cross over to the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC).

Tatar expressed his disappointment that the Pope was only visiting the South, stating that “Cyprus has two peoples, not just the Christian Greek Cypriots, but the Muslim Turkish Cypriots as well.”

He also said that Greek Cypriots used the Pontiff’s visit to gain political advantage.

President Ersin Tatar said this was yet another proof that the Greek Cypriot administration was using religious beliefs for its own gains.

He reminded that Pope Francis who had visited Turkey in 2014 as a guest of Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan had first visited Anıtkabir.

“During his meeting with Mr Erdoğan he had called for an increase in dialogue between all faiths on an equal basis,” he said, adding that no one or no people should be excluded or subject to discrimination.

“Since Turkish Cypriots are Muslims they should not be excluded or discriminated against,” Tatar said, expressing the hope that the Pope will accept his invitation to cross over to the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC).
