President Tatar makes statements on the Cyprus issue
Date Added: 26 December 2023

President Ersin Tatar said that there is no such situation as “a new process is starting on the Cyprus Issue”.

Tatar, who participated in a special broadcast during the BRT Reception, made important statements while answering questions on the Cyprus Issue.

Stating that Türkiye continues to fully support the new policy on the Cyprus Issue, Tatar stated that a federal solution in Cyprus no longer seems possible.

Answering a question regarding the UN Secretary General’s appointment of a Special Representative for Cyprus, Tatar emphasized that a Personal Representative will be appointed, not a Special Representative.

He emphasized that the Personal Representative of the United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres, Maaría Ángela Holguín Cuéllar, will be appointed for a period not exceeding 6 months, will work under the Secretary-General, not the Security Council, and her only task will be to investigate whether there is common ground between the two sides in order to start a new and official negotiation process.

Noting that the Turkish Cypriot side has given its consent to the appointment of a Personal Representative by the UN Secretary General after these conditions are met, President Tatar stated that he expects this appointment to be realized in the near future.
