President Ersin Tatar stressed on Thursday that the TRNC will benefit from the opening of the fenced city of Maraş in terms of the economy and tourism.

Speaking during the Eurasia Service Awards 2021 Ceremony in Ankara, Tatar said Maraş stood as a driving force for the TRNC.

Reminding that the Ottomans conquered Cyprus in 1571, he said “Maraş is ancestral land.”

Explaining that foundations were first established in Maraş following the islands conquest by Ottomans, Tatar said that these properties were later unlawfully transferred to the Greek Cypriots by the British colonial administration.

He reminded that Maraş was a holiday destination which hosted most tourists in the Mediterranean before 1974.

“We received strong approval when we announced that the time had come to reopen Maraş. The closed city of Maraş which we are reopening for settlement with the support of motherland Turkey stands there as a driving force for the TRNC. The TRNC, following the Maraş initiative is a more powerful state in terms of economy, tourism and politics. The two-state solution policy we are pursuing in cooperation with Turkey is a more dignified policy” the president said.

“Peoples have the right to self determination and this is also valid in Cyprus” Tatar added.

Stating that the TRNC, under the guarantee of Turkey had been struggling for its right to self determination with its people, state and institutions, the President said “the world should also accept this reality. On the contrary, returning to pre 1974 has the potential to bring back all kinds of conflict, fighting, unrest and turmoil.”
