President Ersin Tatar marked his fourth year in office with reflections on his tenure, emphasizing his commitment to achieving a fair, lasting, and sustainable agreement that ensures the happiness and prosperity of the Turkish Cypriot people.
“My main goal is to reach an agreement where the Turkish Cypriot people can live happily, in prosperity, with sovereignty, independence, and freedom under their state,” Tatar stated during an evaluation of his term with the Turkish News Agency (TAK).
Reflecting on the past four years, Tatar highlighted his dedication to fulfilling promises made to the people, despite facing challenges and criticisms. “I continue to walk the path I believe is right, alongside my people, undeterred by attacks from both within and outside. My conscience is clear, and I hold my head high,” he said.
In a statement underscored by the slogan “A New Era, A New Vision: Four Years in the Presidency,” Tatar reiterated his willingness for dialogue on the Cyprus issue but emphasized that the sovereignty rights of the Turkish Cypriot people are non-negotiable.
Tatar spoke about the “two-state policy” he has advocated, which he says has been communicated to the world with the support of Türkiye.
He recalled presenting this new approach during a historic meeting in Geneva, introducing different perspectives to the negotiation table after previous federal solution attempts failed.
According to Tatar, even the United Nations has become more receptive to new ideas, exploring ways to bring both sides together. With Türkiye’s backing, the TRNC has continued to present its stance on the Cyprus issue to international bodies, including the Organization of Turkic States and the Organization of Islamic Cooperation.
President Tatar reiterated the desire for the TRNC’s sovereignty, emphasizing that it is a fundamental right, not open to negotiation. “Our sovereignty is an inherent right,” Tatar affirmed, adding that a return to the framework of the Republic of Cyprus is no longer relevant.
Instead, he called for good neighbourly relations and cooperation between the two states on the island.
While noting that common ground for formal negotiations has yet to be established, Tatar expressed readiness for collaboration in various fields before any final settlement is reached.
“We have never shied away from dialogue and talks, but a solid foundation is necessary for official negotiations. However, we are ready for cooperation without hesitation,” he remarked.
In a bid to enhance the sense of belonging among Turkish Cypriots worldwide, Tatar also suggested that citizens should be granted voting rights without residence requirements, a proposal he has shared with the government.
As part of the commemoration of his four years in office, President Tatar presented a booklet titled “A New Era, A New Vision: Four Years in the Presidency,” detailing his achievements and ongoing initiatives.
